AFL Teams – 2012 Finals Week 1 – Sliding Dawes or Turning back time?
The Home and Away season is behind us and the real important finals season begins. Eight sides are left and only one will hold up the Cup at the end of September. The Pies have been one of the heavily backed favorites most of the year but coming into finals the footy world is questioning if they are as good as we first thought that they were earlier in the year. One of the big areas of concern has been on their tall forwards, Cloke and Dawes. Both have been not up to the level they have shown over the last couple of years and that came to a head last week with the dropping of Dawes for the side to face the Bombers. Cloke repsonded to this and had a wonderful game, back to his old self. While that was happening, Chris Dawes sat on the sidelines, not even able to play at VFL level as the Pies were not in the VFL finals. But not playing Dawes means that Jolly’s only assistence in the ruck was Nick Maxwell. While the Hawks rucks aren’t the best in the league, they aren’t the worst either so Roughead up against Nick could be a bad thing for the Pies. If Dawes comes in, Jackson Paine is likely to miss. Jarrod Blair is also a chance to return.

There opponents, the Hawks, need to cover the loss of Brent Guerra who torn his hammy in the final quarter of his teams win against the Eagles on Friday night. His loss is bigger then a lot would realize as he has the right amount of defense and the right amount of offense. The contenders to replace him would be lead by 2008 Grand Final star, Xavier Ellis. This would most likely push Hodge or Paul Poupolo to the defensive end of the field and have Ellis more as an extra midfielder or possibly the sub. If Clarkson and his match committee decide that the defensive side of Guerra’s role is what most needs replacing, Thomas Murphy would be the obvious replacement. It is arguable that Shane Savage makes the most sense as a sub with his pace able to add to the teams final quarter. The interesting one is Kyle Cheney. He is the guy most see as heir apparent to Guerra long term but has he done enough this year to step in now. Stephen Gilham, another possible option, is believed to have a Knee injury and won’t be considered.
