AFL Match Review Panel – Round 23, 2012 – MRP or RLRP?

Finals are here but we have get through the remnants of the final round, round 23,  and the reports that came from it. With all the finals match-ups know, funny things started to happen and perhaps those that are annoyed with the Match Review Panel will be happy with the new system that emerged. Its the RLRP! That is the Ross Lyon Review Panel. Its a panel of 1 and all their thoughts are to do with Fremantle opponents and he announces the findings at his press conference. But seriously, the big calls of the week seem to have centered on the Cats match with the Swans.

We already have Paul Chapman reported for a bit of whack on Ben McGlynn for the game. That seems very week and most believe will come to nothing. If it comes to something, it will mean that he will miss a week as he already had a fair number of points loading. Then their is SteveJ. Steve Johnson may have to answer the question of what he was doing to Dan Hannebery! He also has 78 points on his record that mean even the lowest ruling would see him out. He apparently got involved with Dan when he was on the ground and its thought that he could go for interfering with an injured player.

On the other side of that game, Heath Grundy could be in trouble for striking the jPod (James Podsiadly). He does have the benefit of having no points hang over and a 25% discount for keeping his nose clean. Also on all these players side is the theory that “For the first 23 rounds the MRP fall over themselves to wide guys out and for the final 4 weeks of the finals they do every thing they can to keep them on the park!” I can’t recall who said that but it was tweeted out over the course of the weekend.

Heath Grundy, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence (225 points, two matches) against James Podsiadly, Geelong Cats, during the second quarter of the Round 23 match between the Sydney Swans and the Geelong Cats, played at Simonds Stadium on Saturday September 1, 2012.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Geelong Cats Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing poor record of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 137.50 points and a one-match sanction.

Other incidents Assessed:

The match day report against the Brisbane Lions’ Dayne Zorko for striking the Western Bulldogs’ Clay Smith was assessed. After viewing all available footage, receiving a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club and speaking to the umpire who laid the report on the day, it was the view of the panel that Zorko’s action was not a striking motion. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ Steve Johnson and the Sydney Swans’ Dan Hannebery from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Following the immediate preceding incident for which Johnson has been charged by the MRP, Hannebery is on the ground when Johnson pulls him to his feet. It was the view of the panel that while Johnson’s action was unnecessary, the force involved in the action of lifting Hannebery was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.

Contact between the GWS Giants’ Chad Cornes and North Melbourne’s Shaun Atley from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Atley is contesting a mark when Cornes comes at him to spoil from the opposite direction. It was the view of the panel that Cornes made contact with the ball in a spoiling motion and then lands on Atley. The panel said Cornes’ action was not unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda’s Terry Milera and Carlton’s Rhys O’Keeffe from the first quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. O’Keeffe is following his opponent Brendon Goddard as the ball is being prepared to be kicked back into play after a point is scored. As O’Keeffe is following Goddard, he is blocked by Milera. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.

Contact between Carlton’s Mitch Robinson and St Kilda’s Leigh Montagna from the first quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Montagna is attempting to dispose of the ball when he is bumped by Robinson. After viewing all available footage, the panel could not be satisified there was forceful high contact to the head or neck region. No further action was taken.

Contact between Carlton’s Chris Yarran and St Kilda’s Brendon Goddard from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.

Contact between the Western Bulldogs’ Liam Picken and the Brisbane Lions’ Elliott Yeo from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
