Charges Laid:

Matthew Scarlett, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence against Cory Dell’Olio, Essendon, during the fourth quarter of the Round 17 match between the Geelong Cats and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 20, 2012.

In summary, due to an existing poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of five matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 50 per cent to 187.50 points and a one-match sanction. He also has 33.52 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 221.02 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 165.77 points and a one-match sanction.

Other incidents Assessed:

Contact between West Coast’s Beau Waters and the Adelaide Crows’ Kurt Tippett from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Tippett has possession of the ball and is in the process of kicking. Waters is coming towards his opponent and seeks to smother his kick. As Tippett kicks the ball, the pair clash heads. It was the view of the panel the contact was an accidental head clash beyond the control of the players. No further action was taken.

Contact between Carlton’s Paul Bower and the Western Bulldogs’ Christian Howard from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel said Howard was running on to a loose ball as Bower came towards him from the opposite direction. Howard took possession of the ball and, as Bower prepared to tackle him, the Bulldogs’ player handballed over his opponent and towards a team mate. Bower braced for contact, which was unavoidable, and it was the view of the panel that Bower had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Ben McGlynn and St Kilda’s Brendon Goddard from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. McGlynn and Goddard were contesting a loose ball. McGlynn bumps Goddard side to side as he attempts to gain possession and the pair clash heads. It was the view of the panel the contact was an accidental head clash beyond the control of the players. No further action was taken.
