AFL Match Review Panel – Round 12, 2012 – Whack a mole or Bachar a Bugg?

Match Review Panel Findings

AFL MRP – Round 12, 2012 – Whack a mole or Bachar a Bugg?

Another round of only 6 games and I would think that there maybe some talk of the sling tackle from the matches that I saw, including the Hawks v Lions yesterday but the only Match day report was Bachar Houli making front on contact to Thomas Bugg. If I have the incedant correct, you can see it here. If this is the one, I would have thought that Houli will be fine for this one. He did come in and too me looked like he was going for the ball.

Are there any other possible issues? According to FanFooty, Gerald Healy’s love child, Matt Thomas of Port may be looked at for a bump on Tom Liberatore in the 2nd quarter. Also there were some sling tackles but none of the cases come to my mind at the moment. Buddy Franklin had another tackle that was slingy in nature but I don’t think was as bad as last week and probably won’t even be considered. There was a sling/driving tackle by “The Peoples Beard”, Ben Hudson on Hawk Shane Savage that maybe looked at as it gave away a free kick and may have had more of a drive of the head by Hudson.

Have I missed any? Let me know in the comments below!

UPDATES

  • Mon 1:35pm: Have added the details of the only match day report, that I mentioned above.
  • Mon 2pm: Will Minson is being investigated for allegedly making an offensive slur towards Danyle Pearce. Some are reporting that it was something involving Pearce’s mother. Lucy Cornes, wife of Kane Cornes, wasn’t happy either especially after Will had made disparaging comments to Kane in relation to their son in the past that saw him forced to apologies. This could be dealt with by the MRP or could go to mediation. Will update this post when more is known.
  • Mon 3:25pm: Gerald Healy will be lost as his love child wont play for the next 3 weeks. Matt Thomas has been give 2 matches for his bump on Little Libba. Was other reprimands and fines that will be in the full details soon.
  • Mon 3:37pm: Oh and the investigation into Will Minson is not yet complete.
  • Mon 3:54pm: As you would expect, Bulldogs working with the AFL on the Minson issue.
  • Mon 4pm: Details of the issues already decided on are in (see below).
  • Mon 10:45pm: Added the Verdict video with Mark Fraser, head of the Match Review Panel.
  • Tues 12:15pm: All players from Round 12 accepted their punishments but the tribunal will sit on the Dane Swan tripping charge.
  • Tues 12:20pm: Will Minson has, among other things, been suspended for 1 match for his slur against Danyle Pearce.
  • Tues 5:46pm: Tribunal has found Dane Swan guilty. He gets 60 point on his record but almost as important, loses his 5+ year good record for any future offense.

Details of the Will Minson Punishment:

The Western Bulldogs today imposed a one match suspension on Will Minson for using insulting language in an exchange with Danyle Pearce, during Sunday’s game against Port Adelaide.

Other incidents Assessed:

The match day report against Richmond’s Bachar Houli for making forceful contact from front-on against the GWS Giants’ Tomas Bugg was assessed. The panel said Bugg was on the ground and was seeking to handball the ball to a teammate. Houli comes towards him with his arms outstretched in a bid to block or smother the ball and high contact was made. It was the view of the panel that Houli’s actions were a legitimate attempt to spoil or smother the ball. No further action was taken.

The actions of West Coast’s Jack Darling from the first quarter of Thursday’s match were assessed. The ball was kicked into the West Coast forward line and Darling took possession of the ball after it bounced, as an opponent in Carlton’s Heath Scotland came towards him. Darling puts out his right arm to prepare to try and break the tackle from Scotland. As Scotland tackles Darling, the vision of the incident from side-on shows that Darling’s arm is forced upwards and makes contact with his own face. It was the view of the panel there was some high contact and the player’s actions were not an excessive exaggeration of the contact. No further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda’s Jason Blake and the Adelaide Crows’ Taylor Walker from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Matt Dea and the GWS Giants’ Jeremy Cameron from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was loose on the ground after a marking contest and Cameron is in the process of bending down to pick up the ball. Dea comes to the contest and has his arms out in front of him in a bid to either win possession or to tackle his opponent. High contact was made by the Richmond player and a free kick was paid. It was the view of the panel that Dea had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Shane Edwards and umpire Matt Stevic from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. After viewing all available video evidence and interviewing umpire Stevic, who said he could not recall if player Edwards made any actual contact with his motion to reach towards him, it could not be determined that any umpire contact had occurred. No further action as taken.

Contact between Port Adelaide’s Hamish Hartlett and the Western Bulldogs’ Tom Liberatore from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Hartlett was in possession of the ball after a throw-in and is tackled by Western Bulldogs’ player Ryan Griffen. As Hartlett attempts to break the tackle to handball the ball away, he makes high contact with player Liberatore. It was the view of the panel that Hartlett was legitimately trying to break the tackle on him and the high contact to Liberatore was accidental. No further action was taken.

Players reported from the weekend’s matches
