AFL Match Review Panel – Round 11, 2012 – Frank-sling Tackle or Hunt of a Stomp

Match Review Panel Findings

AFL Match Review Panel – Round 11, 2012 – Frank-sling Tackle

Only 6 matches this week and in fact as I write this, there is still the Queens Birthday Monday match to go but we have two big reportable offenses to look at. The one from the title is a Sling tackle from Buddy Franklin that has already been reported. He was reported for a sling tackle on Paul Stewart. Buddy grabs Stewart and throws him to the ground pretty much through 270 degrees. It will probably come down to how the Match Review Panel review the grading of the impact. For the laws, it is probably a negligent rather then a reckless tackle. There was no high contact so it will not get that extra point so it will come down to if it is lower then the necessary level of impact to constitute a report. There is a chance that it could be anywhere from not enough impact to medium. Its probably unlikely that it is high impact as Stewart took the kick. What could be in Buddy’s favor is that he didn’t pin the arms and in fact that probably caused the most damage in that stewart put his arm out to protect himself and might of knocked his elbow. Another thing that might go in his favor is that the match report shows no injuries.

Here is the video:

The other big incident was in the first match of the round. Josh Hunt stood on Eddie Betts hand/wrist. Its hard to see if it was deliberate, but it seems that Hunt looks down and stomps in one monition on Betts hand. This would probably come under the Rough Conduct charge. This will be an interesting one to look at. Here it is:

As the pair of players were heading towards goal, Brown pushes Sylvia in the chest and there was a clash of heads. Other incidents Assessed:

The match day report against Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin for engaging in rough conduct against Port Adelaide’s Paul Stewart from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The panel said Stewart had taken possession of the ball after a marking contest and was then immediately tackled around the waist by Franklin. As Stewart was tackled by his opponent, he attempted to dispose of the ball with a kick, but did not make contact with the ball. Franklin did not have both of Stewart’s arms pinned in his tackle and took his opponent to the ground in one continuous motion. Contact by Stewart with the ground was made by his hip and arm. After viewing all available footage, receiving a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club and speaking to the umpire who laid the report on the day, it was the view of the panel the tackle was not unreasonable in the circumstances and Stewart was not driven into the ground with excessive force. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ Steve Johnson and Carlton’s Michael Jamison from the quarter time break of Friday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
