AFL Match Review Panel – Round 9, 2012 – Brown out?
When I sit down to write this article, I look though FanFooty to see who M0nty has given the TV icon to see who might have an issue with the Match Review Panel his week. There was a small amount this week. Steven Morris in the Tigers mauling of the Hawks but I don’t think there was much there. Shuey for a punch in the last quarter of their destruction of the Dockers. So not much pickings there. I remember a sling tackle that Buddy laid that could be looked at (although no type of injury there) but he should be okay.
So the main thing that I see the MRP looking at is a possible charge Jonathan Brown laid that began a melee that will also be looked at. The charge of a player in a marking contest isn’t seen often these days but this looked like the old fashion charge. The melee will see the AFL harvest quite a few dollars you would think. Players came from all over the field. Don’t take my word for it, lets go to the video!

Other incidents Assessed:
Contact between Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell and Richmond’s Alex Rance from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Rance is preparing to kick the ball and is being confronted by Mitchell. Mitchell swings his arm recklessly but contact is made with his upper arm and chest to Rance. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from Richmond, it was the view of the panel the impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Ben McGlynn and St Kilda’s Jack Steven from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Stevens is in the process of leaving the field before the next bounce, while McGlynn was moving into the centre to take up his position for the resumption of play. The down-the-ground vision showed that both players were moving on their line for some distance, and neither player altered his direction. Contact is made between the pair as they cross paths. It was the view of the panel that McGlynn did not actively change direction to bump Steven and no further action was taken.
Contact between the Adelaide Crows’ Bernie Vince and Collingwood’s Jarryd Blair from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Collingwood’s Simon Buckley handballs the ball towards his team mate Blair. Vince is coming towards Blair and makes contact with the ball, knocking it out of bounds. After making contact with the ball, Vince makes high contact with Blair, and a free kick is paid to the Collingwood player. It was the view of the panel that Vince was making a realistic attempt to spoil the ball from Blair’s possession and was not negligent or reckless. No further action was taken.
Contact between Essendon’s Heath Hocking and the GWS Giants’ Tomas Bugg from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. After receiving a medical report from the GWS Giants and reviewing all available footage, it was the view of the panel the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.
