AFL Teams – Round 9, 2012 – Hammy Pie means No Swan Crow!
Injuries have struck the Pies again just when they beat the reigning premiers and are on their way to face one of the new challengers! Swan has strained his hammy near the start of the last quarter and will miss at least 2 weeks. I think it will be three rounds as I don’t see the point risking him in Round 11 to face the winless Demons! Then in round 12 they have the bye, so I would put Swanny on ice till round 13. That wasn’t the only injury, just when Chris Tarrant is returning via the VFL and you started to think about how good that backline could be with the emergence of Keefe, having All Australian Reid and the return of Tarrant. But that was dashed with Ben Reid getting injured late in the game with a quad injury. This wouldn’t get so bad if it happened one week later as the Pies have the Suns and Demons into the bye but they have one of the hottest teams in the league this week, the Crows!

So although Tarrant played in the VFL last week, Nathan Buckley said they won’t be rushing him back until he is ready. Tom Young, Jamie Elliot, Cameron Wood and Kirk Ugle were impressive in the VFL last week and will come into consideration to get a gig this week. On the other side of the game, the Crows have one of the best (aka shortest) injury lists in the league with just 3 guys on the official list and not really names that would be knocking down the door to get a game in the best 22! David Mackay, Richard Douglas, Andy Otten, Brodie Martin and Brad Symes are just some of the names of guys that are having to spend their time in the SANFL waiting for their opportunity. Taylor “Tex” Walker will be out on the second week of his 2 week suspension.
The other big injury news is at the Blues with Marc Murphy being ruled out for an extend period after injuring his shoulder. But that wasn’t all, there are also question marks on backmen Lachie Henderson and Nick Duigan from the weekend and the likely hood that Jarrad Waite won’t get up for this game! Cult sensation, Josh Bootsma is likely to return to the side while Kane Lucas and Brock McLean will be chances to return to the seniors. The good news is that they play the beaten down Demons this week to try to build their confidence. The Demons will lose the embattled Liam Jurrah to an ankle injury. Colin Sylvia has also been disappointing on the field and picked on by the media for smiling (how dare he) after the game! Ricky Petterd is in the wings hoping to get his call up, as is the son of Brownlow Medalist Paul Couch, Tom Couch, who continues to put up good numbers in the VFL but can’t get a look in for the seniors! Forward/2nd Ruck option, Stefan Martin (who is returning from injury (yes footy media, he was injured not that he couldn’t break into the side as you suggested when he waved to the cameron at a recent game)) had a good performance on the weekend and could come in to allow the Dees to leave Clarke up forward and help out the Big Russian in the Ruck.
In other possible selection news:
- Essendon will lose Dustin Fletcher with an abductor injury but they only have the Giants so there could be a high level of caution taken with players with niggles. Kyle Hardingham and Courtenay Dempsey could miss with niggles. Tate Pears, Kyle Reimers, Travis Colyer and Mark McVeigh could be looked at to return to the side
- Adam McPhee looks certain return for the Dockers. Alex Silvangi is knocking the door down to return. Jonthan Griffin could be considered to help out Sandilands against Cox and Nic Nat.
- Cats will welcome back Matty Scarlett.
- The Giants could have as many as 8 changes this weekend. Dylan Shiel, Tomas Bugg and Devon Smith seem certain to return. Toby Greene will miss due to suspension. Many DreamTeam/SuperCoach coaches will be hoping for the return of James McDonald to make some money before the Giants round 11 bye.
- Kangaroos will wait on the fitness of Hamish McIntosh. Lachlan Hansen won’t be in the mix after being suspended by the VFL tribunal. Liam Anthony play well in the VFL and could be ready for a quick return.
- Tigers lose promissing key defender, Dylan Grimes for a few weeks. Tyrone Vickery will face a test to see if he returns from a calf injury.
- Scott Watters has already said that Sam Fisher will not return this week. Raphael Clarke and Adam Schneider both played well in the VFL and could push for a place in the side
- Matty Priddis and Adam Selwood are expected to return for the Western Derby for the the league leaders.
- Bulldogs are excited to have the return of Adam Cooney for the Friday night match of tradition rivals (i.e. Dogs v Cats, get it?) after missing with that tricky knee of his!

- Thur 11:15am: Seems Ben Griffiths could be the replacement for Grimes to come in and take on Roughy and Buddy according to Hardwick.
- Thur midday: Cats have upgraded Jonathan Simpkin off the rookie list as a replacement for Nathan Vardy.
- Thur 12:05pm: In a press Conference today, Ross Lyon confirms that Griffin will ruck with Sandi and Clarke will play as permanent forward.
- Thur 12:07pm: Pies have put Luke Ball on the injury list and upgraded Marley Williams off the Rookie list.

- Fri 1:20pm: Gold Coast have been hit by illness with Aaron Hall and Steven May removed from the Suns emergency list replaced by Luke Russell and Josh Toy. Wonder if something is up here!
