AFL Match Review Panel – Round 7, 2012 – Tackling Tex Walks knife edge

A weekend of updates took place on the weekend. Giants beat slightly older brother the Suns. Tigers beat the Swans but the biggest upset was arguably the Crows trouncing the Cats in a manner that has the pundits calling it an end of the run of the Cats. But there wasn’t a lot of incidents that jumped out as being potential reports. The main incident was a sling tackle from Taylor Walker on Harry Taylor. The Tackle left Taylor in a bad way but he returned to the game. The AFL don’t look kindly on these sort of tackles and Tex Walkers bad record won’t go well for him!

The other incident from the game that I saw on the day and figured I must of seen it wrong. Joel Corey had a free kick against him that he didn’t like and he felt it necessary to give the umpire the finger. Another thing the AFL don’t take kindly too and he surely will be a little lighter in the pocket.

UPDATES

  • Just the one Match day report.
  • Decisions are in. Walker gets 2 weeks due to a bad record and Corey is lighter in the wallet.
  • Have added “The Verdict” video for this round with Mark Fraser. Have to say personally I still think that Lovett-Murray incident should of been a report!
  • No tribunal tonight. Corey and Walker plead guilty.
  • Updated with the incidents looked at out of Monday night footy between Blues and Saints. No charges laid but an interesting one looked at.

————————-

Incidents Assessed:

Contact between St Kilda’s Lenny Hayes and umpire Matthew Leppard from the third quarter of Monday’s match was assessed. Umpire Leppard had bounced the ball and was heading backwards away from the centre circle. As player Chris Judd and player Lenny Hayes were coming to the contest, Hayes was being held by one arm by Judd. It was the view of the panel that Hayes, who was trying to balance himself while being held, was not negligent. No further action was taken.

The actions of St Kilda’s Brendon Goddard after a confrontation with Carlton’s Mitch Robinson from the third quarter of Monday’s match were assessed. St Kilda had kicked a goal when players Mitch Robinson and David Armitage were briefly involved in a show of strength. Player Goddard runs to Robinson, who pushes at him with an open hand and makes slight contact to the St Kilda player’s face. Robinson then pulls downwards at Goddard’s jumper and the St Kilda player goes to ground. It was the view of the panel that Robinson’s pulling action on the guernsey contributed to Goddard going to ground. While Goddard’s actions were exaggerated, they did not exceed the threshold of unsportsmanlike conduct as per the Tribunal guidelines relating to staging. No further action was taken.

Sanctions Accepted:

Taylor Walker, Adelaide Crows, has accepted a two-match sanction for engaging in rough conduct against Harry Taylor, Geelong Cats, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between Adelaide Crows and the Geelong Cats, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday May 12, 2012.

Joel Corey, Geelong Cats, has accepted a $900 sanction for making an obscene gesture during the third quarter of the Round Seven match between the Geelong Cats and the Adelaide Crows, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday May 12, 2012.

Charges Laid:

Taylor Walker, Adelaide Crows, has been charged with a Level Two engaging in rough conduct offence against Harry Taylor, Geelong Cats, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between Adelaide Crows and the Geelong Cats, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday May 12, 2012.

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his two-game sanction must remain at two matches, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Geelong Cats Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has a bad record of 93.75 demerit points, increasing the penalty to 318.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 239.06 points and a two-match sanction.

Joel Corey, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a first offence for making an obscene gesture during the third quarter of the Round Seven match between the Geelong Cats and the Adelaide Crows, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday May 12, 2012.

In summary, he can accept an $900 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making an obscene gesture is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

Other incidents Assessed:

The match day report against the Gold Coast Suns’ Tom Lynch for bumping or making forceful contact from front-on against the GWS Giants’ Phil Davis was assessed. Lynch and Davis were coming at the ball from opposite directions. Lynch had his arms outstretched in front of him in a bid to win the ball. As Lynch approached the ball, Davis dives forward and hit the ball to a team mate, just before his opponent was able to gather the ball. High contact was made to Davis but it was the view of the panel that Lynch was trying to win possession and did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between Melbourne’s Jordie McKenzie and Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. McKenzie, Mitchell and Hawthorn player Jordan Lewis are all coming towards a loose ball from three different directions. Mitchell dives head first to tap the ball to a team mate while McKenzie slides legs first in a bid to win possession and makes contact with Mitchell’s body with his lower leg. A free kicks was not paid for the contact to Mitchell but should have been. After receiving a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club and reviewing all available footage, it was the view of the panel the impact was not sufficient to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between the GWS Giants’ Jeremy Cameron and the Gold Coast Suns’ Charlie Dixon from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. GWS’ player Toby Greene has the ball and is running towards goal. Player Cameron comes in to shepherd for his team mate and he and player Dixon meet in a bump, within close proximity of the ball. Cameron stayed low in his bumping action and did not leave the ground. The injury to player Dixon was caused by an accidental clash of heads between the players, which was outside the control of player Cameron. No further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Robin Nahas and the Sydney Swans’ Nick Smith from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Smith has his head down after picking up the ball when he is tackled by Nahas. Nahas applies a tackle, without making high contact, and takes Smith to ground with the forward momentum of the Sydney player. Smith’s head makes contact with the ground but it was the view of the panel that Nahas did not use excessive force or drive his opponent into the ground. No further action was taken.

Contact between Essendon’s Nathan Lovett-Murray and West Coast’s Matthew Priddis from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Priddis has collected the ball and is tackled by Lovett-Murray. Lovett-Murray takes Priddis to ground and it was the view of the panel the Essendon player did not sling or drive Priddis into the ground with excessive force with his tackle, and that the pair fell to the ground together. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Todd Banfield and Collingwood’s Dayne Beams from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was loose with Beams and Banfield coming from opposite directions. Beams has bent down to collect the ball while Banfield is also moving low in a bid to gather the ball which is rolling away from him. Banfield has his arms outstretched in front on him to collect the ball and it was the view of the panel the Brisbane player had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between North Melbourne’s Jack Ziebell and the Western Bulldogs’ Mitch Wallis from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Wallis is on the ground attempting to secure possession when Ziebell slides in and attempts to block the handball of the Bulldogs’ player. Ziebell makes contact with his lower leg and a free kick is paid to Wallis. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club, it was the view of the panel the impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

The following players were reported from the weekend’s matches:

Tom Lynch, Gold Coast Suns, reported by umpire Nick Foot for bumping or making forceful contact from front-on against Phil Davis, GWS Giants, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between the Gold Coast Suns and the GWS Giants, played at Manuka on Sunday May 13, 2012.

Comments

  1. Report of Taylor Walker a joke – not a sling tackle. No report from the umpire or free kick so on-filed adjudication was that the tackle was fine. MRP created to stop behing the play incidents and not to take the place of after game umpiring. Stop sanitizing the game or soon we will have players outfitted like Grid Iron with TV replays every 2 minutes for referees.

    • Have to say Steve that I somewhat agree with you. In fact I sort of think the Lovett-Murray incident was worst. But this is why we have the system we have. If the player/club feels like it wasn’t bad enough for a report, grow some cods and take it to the tribunal. (Note: About to put up “The Verdict” video with MRP head man, Mark Fraser. He explains why one was reportable and other wasn’t but I still think that the LM one was as bad or worst).
