AFL Teams for Round 7, 2012 – Battle of the Newbies
This week see the two newest teams in the league, the Gold Coast Suns and the Greater Western Sydney Giants, are facing off for the first time in the Home and Away season. Both are yet to have a win (along with Melbourne) but have been impressiveness in there recent matches. The biggest team selection aspect of the match is the does Gaz play or doesn’t he! Suns skipper Gary Ablett trained during the week and I find it hard to see him not being named for the Suns but weather he actually plays or not is another story. They have lost Nathan Bock for an extended period but could get back other big recruit Michael Rischitelli. Steven May and Rory Thompson would be likely to be looked at to replace Bock, as would Michael Coad who was upgraded off the rookie list today to replace Bock who was put on the Long Term Injury list.

The Giants also sustained some injuries last week with Setanta O’hAilpin and Dean Brogan both sustaining injuries that will see them out for sometime. In fact Setanta was added to the LTI and Andrew Phillips being upgraded from the rookie list. Phillips is described as “a developing ruckman from Tasmania. The towering teenager marks well on the ground and reads the play of the onballers” so could see him come in for Brogan to help Giles out against Zac Smith. You would also expect Jeremy Cameron and Israel Folau to return for this important match.
The other big question this week, after the events last week, is the value of these named teams today and Friday? Teams are making late changes again left, right and center and one took it to a new level last week. St Kilda, as reported last week, pick Justin Koschitzke as an emergency last week with every man and his dog knowing there was no way the Saints wouldn’t play him against a Hawthorn side that is known to be stretchable in the back end. Surprise, Surprise, Kosi did play of Saturday night but the Saints took it further! They in fact played all their emergencies (Kosi, Dean Polo and Ahmed Saad). Ben McEnvoy was reported out for 4-6 weeks with a knee injury he got at training. Now, to my knowledge no teams train on the day of the game so its fair to say that the Saints knew before Saturday that McEnvoy wouldn’t play apart in the match. But no mention of this was made. Teams have no respect for the fans when it comes to naming their teams. I’m waiting for the team that just goes with a massive change to the team. I mean like 10+! If there are no rules against it, why not, right? AFL needs to act!
Okay, okay, end of rant and onto other team news:
- Chris Knights is pushing for selection for the Crows. Josh Jenkins could get his chance with the suspension this week of Shuan McKernan.
- Andrew Raines and Josh Drummond are likely to return for the Lions.
- The rested up Chris Judd and Jarrad Waite should return from their week off. Ed Curnow and Chris Yarran are in the mix as well.
- Ben Johnson is gone for the rest of the season for the Pies. Darren Jolly, Jarryd Blair and Alan Didak will be in the selection mix as well.
- Bombers goal kicker, Stuart Crameri will need to prove his fitness in order to take on the Eagles.
- Mr 211 (Aaron Sandilands) is almost certain to return to action this week. Steven Hill also looks certain to return. Jon Griffen would likely make way for the Human Tree.
- Hawks have some concerns with Clarko saying they wouldn’t risk Hodge and Gibson. Jarrad Bowman is a definite out after having his appendix removed on Sunday. It is harder to know who replaces him if Gibbo doesn’t come up. Clinton Young and Kyle Cheney are pushing at Box Hill but aren’t the size to replace him. There is a thought that Brock McCauley could get another chance and push Jarryd Roughead down to the back end.
- Big question for the Dees is does Jack Watts come straight back in. James Sellers position looks in risk. Tom Couch is doing everything he can to get a look in and Liam Jarrah played well in the VFL.
- Swans lose their all time games holder, Adam Goodes, this week for 6 weeks. Jesse White, Andrejs Everitt and Tony Armstrong are possible replacements as is Mitch Morton who kicked 10 in the magoos last week.
- Nic Nat is unlikely to return this week for the West Coast
DuckersEagles. Adam Selwood will most likely miss along with suspended Ashton Hams. Koby Stevens is very likely to get his chance

- Fri 11:41am: Ablett is certain to play after training well today.

- Fri 2:37pm: Jim Bartel has been ruled out for the Cats.
- Fri 4:50pm: Sunday teams finalised. Still squads for the Monday night game.
- Sat 1pm: Scarlett out for the Cats! Bartel also out, Giles and Byrnes in. Subs are Shannon Byrnes for the Cats and Jarryd Lyons for the Crows
- Sat 1:05pm: No changes in the Battle of the Babes. Andrew Phillips the sub for the Giants and Josh Toy for the Suns.
