AFL Match Review Panel – Round 4, 2012 – Quiet week? E-Zac-ly!

AFL Match Review Panel – Round 4, 2012

After the big issues last 2 weeks (Goodes/Lake last week and Whitecross the week before), this week doesn’t look like that big an issue. There was a couple around the place. A Zac Dawson high hit on Milney that might be looked at, Kane Cornes hit on Sidebottom that the MRP might view. Shane Tuck had a swinging tackle on Chappy that was a bit crued and there was the sliding incident with the player (who name escapes me now) that might be looked at for the damage done to Gary Rohan, although many feel it was just a plan incident. Most of the news this week seems to be on the injury front! But we will cover all the Match Review Panel/Tribunal news this week, as we do each week! Come back for the Updates!

UPDATES

  • Mon 1:20pm: have added the only Match day report to the post.
  • Mon 5pm: Who said it was a quiet week. Plenty of chargers. See below for full list but Lindsey Thomas gets 2 weeks for slide on Rohan.
  • Mon 6:30pm: North have already said that they are going to challenge the MRP finding on Thomas. This could go either way!
  • Tues 11am: Have added the MRP Video for the week with all the incidents
  • Tues 12:05pm: So on top of Thomas challenging so is Steve Johnson challenging on of his charges. Thoughts are he will get off it but if he doesn’t, he will miss an extra week!
  • Tues 6:40pm: Thomas not guilty. Good result for him and the Roos. Expect the AFL to add a sliding rule to the books next year (if not sooner).
  • Tues 10pm: Just had a chance to see that SteveJ was also cleared.

Other incidents Assessed:

Contact between Essendon’s Sam Lonergan and Carlton’s Andrew Carazzo from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Carazzo was in pursuit of the ball and was tackled by Lonergan. A free kick was paid at the time for a push in the back to the Carlton player. It was the view of the panel that both players were running at pace towards the ball and the momentum of the players took them to the ground when Lonergan laid a tackle. The panel said there was no secondary driving or slinging action to take Carazzo into the turf as part of Lonergan’s attempt to tackle. A free kick was paid but the action was not deemed unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken.

Contact between the GWS Giants’ Chad Cornes and the Adelaide Crows’ Patrick Dangerfield from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Dangerfield picks up a loose ball and turns to his left side. Cornes is coming towards the Adelaide player with his arms out ready to tackle and high contact is made. It was the view of the panel that Dangerfield should have received a free kick for high contact, if it was seen on the day, but that Cornes was attempting to tackle and had no realistic alternative in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Reece Conca and the Geelong Cats’ Allen Christensen from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Christensen has the ball when he is tackled by Richmond player Brandon Ellis. As Christensen goes to ground, the tackle is released and the ball spills free. Christensen attempts to regain possession of the ball and he is met high by Conca, who is coming in to contest the ball. It was the view of the panel that Conca was attempting to win possession and he had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Kieren Jack and North Melbourne’s Andrew Swallow from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The ball was bounced in the centre and landed at Swallow’s feet / knee area, as the North Melbourne player was attempting to take possession of the ball. Jack was running to contest the ball and made high contact with his opponent. A free kick was paid for the contact. It was the view of the panel that Jack had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was taken.

The following players were reported from the weekend’s matches:

Trent West, Geelong Cats, reported by umpire Justin Schmidt for engaging in rough conduct against Ty Vickery, Richmond, during the first quarter of the Round Four match between the Geelong Cats and Richmond, played at Simonds Stadium on Sunday April 22, 2012.
