AFL MATCH REVIEW PANEL/TRIBUNAL REPORT FOR ROUND 20, 2011
So another week and another Buddy incident for the Match Review Panel to look out. Even though the Main Stream Media is reporting that he will go to the tribunal tonight (probably just copying the mistake of the Hawthorn website) it still needs to go be the MRP. The incident was in the first quarter between Lance and serial pest, Scott Thompson. Eye witnesses (admittedly from what could be a biased source being the Hawthorn BigFooty forum) report that it was a love tap and nothing in it:
I saw the incident and there was nothing in it. Barely touched him and if it were most other players, would be insufficient force.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out after incidents involving Lynden Dunn and Paul Chapman were let off last week. The fact that its Buddy v the Umpire, it might come down to the Medical report which could be okay as Thompson played out the game fine.
There will also be a couple of other incidents looked at including:
- Angus “Diver” Monfries bump on Ryan O’Keefe
- Adam Goodes bump on Monfries
- Drew Petrie bump on Rick Ladson
- Adam McPhee for striking Sam Gilbert (this was a match day report)

Other Incidents Assessed:
The match day report laid against Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin for striking North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson during the first quarter of Sunday’s game was assessed. After speaking to the umpire who laid the report, examining all available footage and receiving a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the panel determined the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
Contact between the Gold Coast’s Stephen May and the Geelong Cats’ Joel Corey from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. May had come towards player Corey in a bid to smother the Geelong player’s kick. May’s arm made contact with Corey’s shoulder and then slides upwards to make high contact as the Geelong player completed his kick. May’s action was not seen as a striking motion but a legitimate attempt to try and block the ball. No further action was taken.
Contact between Essendon’s Leroy Jetta and the Sydney Swans’ Martin Mattner from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Mattner was chasing a loose ball when Jetta propped in front of him, making contact with the Sydney player. The panel received a medical report on player Mattner and after a review of all available footage, it was determined there was no forceful high contact made by the Essendon player. No further action was taken.
Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Adam Goodes and Essendon’s Angus Monfries from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Monfries has fumbled a loose ball and is attempting to regain possession when he is met by player Goodes. After reviewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, which stated there was no high contact to player Monfries and he had not been treated for any injury, it was determined that no further action would be taken.
Contact between Essendon’s Angus Monfries and the Sydney Swans’ Ryan O’Keeffe from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. After reviewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Sydney Swans Football Club, it was determined there was no forceful high contact made by player Monfries. No further action was taken.
Contact between North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie and Hawthorn’s Rick Ladson from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Player Petrie has contested a ruck situation and then follows up the loose ball as it goes to ground. Player Ladson is also advancing on the loose ball, in the opposite direction to Petrie, and contact is made between the pair. It was the view of the panel that Petrie’s actions were a realistic attempt to contest the ball and no further action was taken.
