Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report laid against North Melbourne’s Michael Firrito for striking the Brisbane Lions’ Simon Black during the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel spoke to the umpire who laid the match-day report and it was the view of the panel that player Firrito had his eyes on the ball as he approached a marking attempt by player Black. Firrito was slightly pushed off balance by Brisbane Lions player Jack Redden, but continued with his attempt to spoil and made high and late contact with his upper arm to player Black. A 50-metre penalty was paid against player Firrito. It was the view of the panel that Firrito’s action was not a striking action and no further action was taken.

Contact between Collingwood’s Chris Tarrant and the Gold Coast Suns’ Michael Rischitelli from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Tarrant’s action was a legitimate attempt to spoil and no further action was taken.

Contact between Carlton’s Mitch Robinson and Essendon’s Ben Howlett from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Robinson had his eyes on the ball and had put his hands down towards the ball in a bid to win a contest for possession with player Howlett. Player Howlett gets to the ball first and high contact is made. It was the view of the panel that Robinson did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Reece Conca and the Geelong Cats’ Matthew Stokes from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Conca and Stokes are both running towards a loose ball. Stokes takes possession just as Conca reaches the contest and makes contact with his opponent. It was the view of the panel that Conca had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was taken.

Contact between Melbourne’s Luke Tapscott and Hawthorn’s Shane Savage from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Savage has handballed the ball to a teammate when he is met in a bump by player Tapscott. After viewing the available footage and receiving a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, it was determined there was no forceful high contact to player Savage. No further action was taken.

The following players were reported on match day by the umpires to be referred to the Match Review Panel.

Michael Firrito, North Melbourne, reported by umpire Ray Chamberlain for striking Simon Black, Brisbane Lions, during the second quarter of the Round 18 match between North Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday June 23, 2011.
