AFL 2011 Power Rankings – Round 15 – Higher lower or lower higher

How does your club fare against the teams placed higher on the ladder?  What about versus the teams below them?

This week in addition to the usual Power Rankings, I’m taking a good look at each clubs performances against the best and the worst in the AFL.

.

Collingwood 1 UP 1

.

The new #1 team in the Power Rankings, the Pies are back on top after demolishing the helpless Hawks. Just one loss, to Geelong by 3 points, and have cleaned up the rest by an average margin of 52.2 points. Will be hard to topple from here.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -3.0 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +52.2 pts

.

.

Geelong 2 DOWN 1

.

Dropped to #2 in the Rankings, but on top of the AFL ladder for a reason, having taken care of business so far in 2011 – though the round 14 defeat to Essendon was a surprise. They are winning matches well, but have 8 wins with a winning margin under 30 points.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: N/A // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +29.7 pts

.

.

West Coast 3 <NO CHANGE> BYE

.

Scored their most impressive scalp against the Blues recently, but failed against the Pies (down by 52) and Hawks (7 points). The Eagles are performing well against the lesser ranked teams, but would like another crack at Sydney and Essendon (both defeats from early 2011).

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -7.7 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +28.2 pts

.

.

Carlton 4 <NO CHANGE>

.

The Blues almost got over the Cats (lost by 2) whilst they got as close to Collingwood as any team has, other than Geelong and Sydney, going down by 28 points. Finally beating the teams below them consistently – the main setback was the Eagles loss a fortnight ago.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -15.0 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +36.3 pts

.

.

Hawthorn 5 <NO CHANGE>

.

Belted by the Pies most recently, and competitive with the Cats in two outings against them already in 2011. Outside of a round 1 loss to the Crows, have easily and convincingly accounted for the lower ranked teams (10 wins from 11 attempts).

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -21.7 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +35.5 pts

.

.

Sydney 6 <NO CHANGE>

.

Before last weekend (loss to the Crows), the Swans had defeated every team below them on the ladder (average margin of 18 points). Nearly got over the Eagles, but otherwise have struggled against the better teams.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -19.3 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +18.0 pts

.

.

North Melbourne 7 <NO CHANGE>

.

Prior to the setback against the Saints last round, the Roos had rejuvenated their season recently. Best wins have come against Essendon and Melbourne. Have dropped games they should have won against lower ranked sides Tigers, Lions and Saints.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -17.9 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +25.6 pts

.

.

Fremantle 8 UP 1

.

Have only played 3 games against teams currently above them on the ladder (for 3 defeats). Against the rest, they've won 8 out of 11, albeit by an average of only 3.5 points per match. Have a difficult fixture from here.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -22.0 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +3.5 pts

.

.

Melbourne 9 DOWN 1

.

As inconsistent a side as there is in the AFL with 3 wins of 85+ points – yet also 6 losses of 40 points or more. Their most recent performance against the Dogs was the one that will hurt them. Next 5 rounds will shape their season.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -16.0 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +14.1 pts

.

.

St Kilda 10 UP 1

.

A couple of poor efforts against some top teams, but have some surprisingly good performances against teams placed above them on the ladder. Have only faced two teams currently below them on the ladder, so a good fixture awaits them on the run home.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -7.2 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: -2.0 pts

.

.

Essendon 11 UP 2

.

Outside of a shocking performance against the Hawks in round 14, the Dons have done well against the higher ranked teams, highlighted by a 4-point win over the Cats. Have lost their last 3 games to teams currently below them on the ladder.

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -16.3 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +30.3 pts

.

.

Bulldogs 12 <NO CHANGE>

.

The #1 bully in the AFL, statistically. Barely giving a yelp against the teams above them on the ladder, whilst taking care of all teams below them, other than the Saints. Terrible start to 2011, but are they still a chance?

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -33.4 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +35.3 pts

.

.

Richmond 13 DOWN 3

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -23.2 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +14.0 pts

.

.

Gold Coast 14 <NO CHANGE>

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -57.8 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: N/A

.

.

Adelaide 15 UP 1

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -26.5 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: -5.0 pts

.

.

Brisbane 16 DOWN 1

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -24.3 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: +1.5 pts

.

.

Port Adelaide 17 <NO CHANGE>

.

Avg. Margin vs. teams above on ladder: -36.2 pts // Avg. margin vs. teams below on ladder: -3.0 pts
