AFL 2011 Power Rankings – Round 13

.

In this week's Power Rankings, I've looked at the average age and games played of every team fielded in round 13 (or round 12 in the case of Collingwood). How does your club stack up, and has the team "profile" changed since round 1? Read on to find out…

.

.

Geelong 1 <NO CHANGE>

.

Have become marginally older as the season has progressed, even taking into account the current short term absence of Selwood. Have introduced some great kids into a superior senior group, including Vardy, Duncan and Menzel.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 27.2 years & 141 games.

.

.

Collingwood 2 <NO CHANGE> BYE

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 12 Team – 24.9 years & 103 games.

.

.

Carlton 3 <NO CHANGE>

.

No change to their average age throughout the season to date – mostly due to very small injury list and the club being able to field close to a "best 22". Marc Murphy has become a legitimate star. As a Carlton supporter, I am loving the development of Mitch Robison.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.5 years & 91 games.

.

.

West Coast 4 <NO CHANGE>

.

Are only slightly older – but they are getting superb seasons from their experienced core of Cox, Kerr & Embley among others. How good is the potential of Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling, Luke Shuey and Nic Nat?

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.6 years & 94 games.

.

.

Hawthorn 5 <NO CHANGE>

.

The average age of the Hawks playing 22 has dropped almost a year since the start of the season. Injuries to a plethora of their best group, mainly defenders, is the issue. Getting an amazing contribution from youngsters Shiels, Savage and Breust.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.5 years & 84 games.

.

.

Sydney 6 <NO CHANGE>

.

Surprisingly, the Swans "22" has aged a bit since round 1, albeit not by a lot. Daniel Bradshaw has retired, but he hasn't been on the park anyway. They need more from their younger group as the old blokes are carrying them.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 25.8 years & 112 games.

.

.

North Melbourne 7 UP 3

.

This weeks bolter in the rankings, the Kangaroos started the season young and have slowly been able to piece together a stronger team. Wells, Harvey and Petrie have been stellar, but they need more from their future core of Hansen, Ziebell and Anthony.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.3 years & 80 games.

.

.

Essendon 8 <NO CHANGE>

.

The Bombers started the season brilliantly with almost their full list up and firing. They've since slowed down considerably, due to a combination of injuries, suspension and poor form. You have to like Heppell and Crameri, but little else excites.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 23.7 years & 73 games.

.

.

St Kilda 9 <NO CHANGE>

.

An interesting case study – the Saints started as one of the oldest groups, struggled – introduced some youth, only to now be back to nearly where they started at round 1. I've said it before, but the Saints have next to nothing coming through to get fans excited.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 26.5 years & 122 games.

.

.

Fremantle 10 DOWN 3

.

The Dockers are a club that has struggled to get their best 22 on the park. As a result, the age of their weekly 22 has varied, but between round 1 and round 13, there's only a minimal difference. Nathan Fyfe has been a standout but consistency is the worry at Fremantle.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.1 years & 64 games.

.

.

Richmond 11 <NO CHANGE>

.

There are few issues down at Tigerland when it comes to youth, as they are considered by many to be on the cusp of a finals appearance, this year or next. How good is the duo of Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin? Possibly the best "1-2 punch" in the AFL.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 23.3 years & 62 games.

.

.

Melbourne 12 <NO CHANGE>

.

The Dees fielded the second youngest 22 in the AFL in round 13 (only the Suns were younger). If Melbourne can reduce the gap between their best and worst, they would be taken much more seriously. Scully has shown why he is in such high demand by GWS.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 23.0 years & 61 games.

.

.

Bulldogs 13 <NO CHANGE>

.

The Dogs opened 2011 with Premiership ambitions, yet now they are just making up the numbers in the lower half of the ladder. Their group remains relatively experienced – but I think it's time they cut the cord on Gia, Gilbee, Hahn, Hudson & Hall – and go all out on youth.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.9 years & 95 games.

.

.

Gold Coast 14 UP 1

.

If it hasn't been made obvious enough this season, I'm a huge fan of this Gold Coast list. Their average age hasn't changed since round 1, an indication the club is intent to give game time to their kids. Unearthed a beauty in Zac Smith, plus a bunch of other future stars.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 22.9 years & 61 games.

.

.

Adelaide 15 DOWN 1

.

Have become slightly younger as the season has progressed, but their footy remains a mystery with Neil Craig's tenure as senior coach in massive doubt. There are some talented kids at the club – but I think a new coach may be just the tonic to get the club going again.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 23.9 years & 70 games.

.

.

Brisbane 16 <NO CHANGE>

.

Much has been made of the recruiting decisions of Michael Voss in recent times – and it seems the outcome of some of those decisions is coming to fruition this season. The club seems to lack passion, though the serious injury suffered by Jonathon Brown didn't help.

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 23.8 years & 77 games.

.

.

Port Adelaide 17 <NO CHANGE>

.

You may have guessed that I am not exactly Port Power's #1 ticket holder at the minute. I'm not a fan of the way they play, or the list, but at least they've improved their efforts in recent weeks (though their bottom ranking here hasn't changed). Port – give me something!

.

Stat line: Average age & games played of Round 13 Team – 24.3 years & 78 games.
