2011 AFL Predictions – Luke of AFLSpace

So here is the second in the series of Prediction from guest predictors. This one comes from Luke who last year did a series of round reviews for this site and this year, as he points out, will be contributing Power Rankings through out the year. Look for them week to week, and let him know where you agree and disagree. With the first non-me prediction, I added the question about what I should have asked. If it is appropriate, I will answer these predictions in the comments of the post below. Enjoy, and give your feedback in the comments.

Team Supported: Carlton Blues

About: Luke is a contributor for AFL Space – “I’ll be publishing a regular AFL Team Power Rankings article throughout the 2011 season, plus any additional articles I’m inspired to write as the season goes on.”

Grand Finalist: Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs

Premiers: Collingwood

Apart from your own side, which team would you like to see win the flag?

If Carlton aren’t going to win, then probably the Bulldogs would be my preferred team to capture the 2011 flag. They’re due after being so close for a number of years.

Out of those you have out of the 8, who are you most nervous of leaving out (i.e. smokey for the 8)?

It’s too early for the Gold Coast to be up in the 8, so as much as I hate to say it, I’d put Essendon as a “smokey”.  If they don’t get there, I’ll be happy.  If they do, at least I’ve predicted it!

Brownlow Medalist: Brendan Goddard

Smokey for the Brownlow: Scott Pendlebury

Coleman Medalist: Lance “Buddy” Franklin

NAB Rising Star: David Swallow

Player to make the biggest improvement over the year?

I’m expecting Tom Scully to become “elite” this year. There’s a lot of pressure on him with all of the GWS talk, but he had all the abilities to be great – and he can do it sooner than we think.

Player you are happy to spend money to Watch?

The best player in the AFL – Chris Judd.

Last team to lose their first game for the year and what round?

Hawthorn, Round 8

Which Coach will be Sacked first?

Very tough call, but I’ll go with Worsfold.

Will Karmichael Hunt be a success and how many games?

14 games. He’ll be adequate, but not great.

Who is your Favoite Media personality?

Gerard Whately is a star. Love his professionalism and knowledge of almost every sport, much like Bruce McAvaney back in the day. Love that Whately does not buy into the “boys club” that is still in full force in the Melbourne footy media.  Represents ABC with dignity & class always.

Which is your favorite TV broadcast to watch?

Channel 10. But please, oh please, no more Scatterbrain, I mean, Quarterman. He is the biggest drama queen in the business, along with Michael Christian.

Which is you favorite radio station to listen too?

ABC Grandstand, then 3AW.

What will be the biggest story of the Year?

The ongoing Tom Scully to GWS saga. Or just, the GWS saga in general I suppose and which players they’ve signed.

Will we have live Friday night games in 2012? Yes

Who will be the GWS Giants biggest name recruit?

Who would know? But I’ll go the obvious route – Tom Scully.

What prediction should I have asked for and what would your answer have been?

When will the “Sack Brett Ratten” calls start this season? My answer is that they shouldn’t start at all, unless the Blues fall right out of contention for the 8 early on this year. What more could have been expected from him in his 3 or so years so far? He’s done a fine job building the list. Just because his list includes Chris Judd doesn’t mean the club should win a premiership!

  1. Thanks for passing on your predictions.
On your prediction I left out, I think the answer is that its already started. This is more a comment about the media and their pack hunting mentality towards coaches. They pick one that is weak and then tear at them until they bring them down and then they can move onto the next one.
I think Ratten has a great chance to get through the year.
