We knew this day was coming for a while now. Would he go, would he stay? The Gary Ablett Jnr is expected to today announce that he is signing with the AFL’s newest franchise (well if you don’t count Greater Western Sydney), the Gold Coast Suns. The Speculation before the season was that 6 players had signed with the Suns and if Gaz signs today as it is being suggested, he will complete the 6. The first 5 all have signed:
- Nathan Bock formerly of the Adelaide Crows
- Nathan Krakouer formerly of the Port Adelaide Power
- Michael Rischitelli formerly of the Brisbane Lions
- Campbell Brown formerly of the Hawthorn Hawks
- Jarrod Harbrow formerly of the Western Bulldogs
Caroline Wilson reported this morning that it will be announced at 12:30pm from the Crown in Melbourne. She also is reporting that he will sign a 5 year contract for around 10 million dollars. There is no way he can turn this kind of money down as that sort of money will set him up for life! It is also believed that he will be named Captain (possibly with Campbell Brown as his vice captain). The Gold Coast have a different Salary Cap figure to the rest of the league and when you add this on top of the fact that over half their list will be rookies meaning they will be on minium contracts, that has left the money for the older players. It is believed that most of these contracts are front loaded that will allow the Suns to pay their young stars the money they will be after at the end of their first contracts.
The Suns have confirmed the press Conference this morning:
The Gold Coast SUNS CEO Travis Auld and Senior Coach Guy McKenna will hold a media conference in Melbourne today to make a major announcement.
When: Today 12.30pm
Where: Crown Towers, 8 Whiteman St, Southbank
Level 1 Garden Room
The next point of interest in this story after this announcement will be the compensation that the Cats get? So far all the teams losing players have received draft picks at the end of the 1st round of one of the upcoming drafts. They can trade these picks. It is believed that the Cats will get a pick in the earlier part of the draft as well as another 1st round draft pick (probably at the end of the 1st round) in compensation for Ablett. Many will argue that this isn’t fitting compensation for Ablett but is there actually proper compensation for the best player in the league?
So what do you think? Has he made the right move? Will he have success at the Gold Coast or will the money have to do him?
Cats have confirmed that Ablett is going by deleting him from their playing list. They have also called a press conference for 2:30pm down at skilled stadium.
